If your toilet is about to overflow, quickly remove the tank lid and reach down and push the flush valve, the thing that covers the tennis ball-sized opening in the tank, closed. Now you will have to unclog the toilet. Use a toilet plunger to gently and slowly plunge the opening of the toilet until the water goes back to a normal level.
