Good home cooling systems can last for many years, but they won’t last forever. After a while the system loses its ability to cool your home as efficiently, which increases energy costs and reduces the life of the equipment. A typical cooling system, under normal use, will have a lifespan of about 12 to 15 years. But even if your current cooling system has not yet reached its life expectancy, you could still save 20 to 40 percent on your energy costs by replacing your system with a newer, more efficient model.

Replacing an Older Air Conditioning System

When an older system breaks down, it can be tempting to go for the quick fix and just have it repaired, but in most situations it will probably save you more money on cooling costs in the long run just to replace it.

If your home cooling system breaks down there are a few things to consider that may help you to know if it is time to replace your system with a newer, more cost efficient model. First of all, if your current system is already past its life expectancy it is probably time to replace it. Second, and most importantly, newer cooling systems tend to be more energy efficient, and will therefore save you more money on cooling costs overall.

When deciding to replace the HVAC unit for the household, careful consideration should be given to the size and power needed to cool the space within the home.  Ducting and power units should be planned carefully to make sure that they deliver the cooled air where and when necessary, and in the quantities necessary.  This makes sure that there is a correct usage of energy, and that the home remains a comfortable temperature the whole year round - and the decision to replace the HVAC unit will have paid for itself.
