You have invested a lot of money in your home. Now, it's your job to protect it. One of the ways your home can become damaged is with an infestation of termites. Termites can destroy the wood in your home, and the damage they cause can cost thousands of dollars to repair.

When you purchased your home, you probably received a termite letter: a document from a pest control company certifying that there were no active infestations of termites at the time of inspection. Since that time, termites may have come into your home, particularly if a pest control company has not treated your home for termites.

What to Look For When Inspecting for Termites

Termites typically enter the home through openings or cracks around the foundation. Once inside they find wood that they can destroy. Because termites damage wood from the inside out, you may not be able to see any evidence that they are present by looking at the timbers. You may need to probe wood with a screwdriver or a small pick to find the damage.

Two warning signs are termite tubes and termite wings in the area. Termite tubes are earth-colored, and will run from the point of entry to where the bugs enter the wood. You may see termite tubes on cellar or crawlspace walls, around window sills, and exterior masonry. Because termites shed their wings after they have swarmed, the presence of wings may indicate an infestation.

If you suspect a termite infestation, you should immediately contact a pest control company in your area that can provide a professional evaluation, and treatment if necessary. The longer you wait, the more damage your home will suffer.
