When your air conditioner breaks down, it is good to weigh the options before deciding whether to have the air conditioner repaired, or to replace the system. In some cases simply repairing the old air conditioner is the better option, especially if the old system is still under warranty and the problem can be fixed and covered under that warranty. Also, if your current air conditioner is still well within its life expectancy, or if it has provided good service and you like that particular model, then fixing the existing system may be worth the cost of repair. However, it is important to consider that paying for repairs on an old system may just be prolonging the inevitable need to replace it. This being the case, you might actually save money be replacing your old unit before it wears out.
Extend the Life of Your Air Conditioner with Proper Maintenance
In any situation, the best way to ensure a longer life for your air conditioner is regular maintenance of the system and its equipment. Well-maintained air conditioners will last longer, experience fewer breakdowns, and require less energy to run. Regular maintenance will also prevent unwanted costs, and reduce your fuel bill and save you money.
Take good care of your air conditioner, and whatever you decide, do your research, and try to have a plan before a breakdown occurs. By doing this you will avoid having to make a last-minute decision during a summer heat wave, and in the long run will save yourself frustration and money.

Plumbing problems are pretty easy to spot, and most minor plumbing problems are pretty easy to fix too. Some plumbing problems are easier to deal with than others of course. Major problems that involve pipes hidden behind walls or under floors may require the assistance of professional plumbers, but by learning to solve minor problems on your own, you can save significantly on plumbing repairs and maintenance.
Fixing Clogged Drains
The most common plumbing problem is a clogged drain. Hair, grease and soap scum are the major culprits for clogged drains. The easiest solution for a clogged drain is to buy some sort of drain cleaner. (Make sure to get the kind that is recommended for the pipes you have!) If possible, use chemical drain cleaners sparingly as they can damage your pipes if used too much, and can also be hard on the environment. Also, make sure to wear protective goggles and rubber gloves when dealing with chemicals so as not to let them come in contact with your skin.
If after following the label directions the drain cleaner your drain is still clogged, then you can try using a plunger by gently and slowly plunging the opening in the sink. The best solution to this common plumbing problem however, is just proper maintenance. By installing a strainer in the kitchen and bathroom sinks, and routinely cleaning out your drains, you can prevent hair and soap scum, or other objects from slipping down the drain and clogging it up.
