If your house is like mine, you've got traditional wooden single-pane double-hung windows, along with storm windows that you put up every winter to keep out the cold. This style of window was pretty much standard for homes built in the last half of the twentieth century.
This style of window comes with its own set of maintenance chores. Cleaning each individual pane of glass, putting up and taking down the storm windows, climbing up on a ladder to wash the exterior of the windows ... all part of the seasonal honey-do list. Fortunately, technology has advanced tremendously since those days, and modern vinyl or fiberglass replacement windows reduce or eliminate many of these tasks.
First of all, today's replacement windows feature double- or triple paned glass, eliminating the need for separate storm windows. They are much more energy efficient, and as a bonus, many are specially coated to reduce heat transfer and ultraviolet rays that can damage furniture.
Second, many replacement windows are designed so that both sides can be cleaned from the inside of the home. The window can be separated from its frame, and tilted inward for cleaning. Plus, the mullions (which separate the panes of glass in traditional windows) are either between the glass panes, or are removable for cleaning.
